In 1898, German immigrant Adolph Gund founded his soft toy manufacturing company in Norwalk, Connecticut. A pioneer from infancy, Gund was one of the first companies to design and produce teddy bears in the United States. When Mr. Gund retired in 1925 with no children of his own, he sold the business to one of his employees, Jacob Swedlin, with the understanding that the name would always remain "Gund." Three generations later, the Swedlin/Raiffe family is still involved in the leadership of Gund. Over the decades, the company was responsible for countless innovations in the plush toy market, such as Gund's trademarked under-stuffing technique--the key factor in the "world's most huggable plush." Gund pioneered the concept of industry licensing with well known cartoon characters such as Mickey MouseTM, PopeyeTM, and others. The company is also a leader in product safety and set an important industry standard by attaching eyes securely to plush animals to prevent them from becoming a choking hazard for small children.
