Cynthia Gabriel earned a doctorate in medical anthropology from the University of California, Santa Cruz, in part by apprenticing with midwives in a Russian material hospital. A mother of three, she teaches anthropology at Eastern Michigan University, conducts research at the University of Michigan's Institute for Research on Women and Gender, and attends births as a doula in Ann Arbor.
