How to Survive 8 Hours in an Airport with Kids

Author: Green Treehouse  //  Category: Gift Ideas, Products, Travel

I spent the entire day STUCK in an airport–me, myself and I…plus three young children (a preschooler, toddler, and a baby). Given that the flight was supposed to be short and entail a very brief airport visit, I didn’t spend much time packing entertainment toys in the diaper bag. As shocking as it may sound, after eight hours waiting in the terminal, we finally walked off the plane at our final destination with big smiles on our faces–and still in good spirits.

Curious how I managed to survive all those hours WITHOUT losing my cool or dealing with meltdowns? Thank Melissa & Doug! As soon as I realized we were officially STUCK, we headed off to the terminal bookstore in search of puzzles. I found a fabulous, gigantic Melissa & Doug floor puzzle. We all plopped down on the floor near our gate and the kids spent hours assembling, disassembling and reassembling the puzzle. I even had a chance to read a book while they played beside me!

I’ve always loved Melissa & Doug products, but now I’m a bigger fan!

Do you have any airport survival tips for parents traveling with kids?

$20 or Less: Great Gifts for Tots

Author: Green Treehouse  //  Category: Gift Ideas, Products, Toys

Pressed for affordable gift ideas for that little one in your life?  Here are 5 great gifts for tots:

1.  Pony or Unicorn Stick.  Sure, playing with the broom is fun, but not nearly as much fun as the real thing.

Bubble Mower

2.  Bubbles.  What kid doesn’t love bubbles and bubble accessories, like a gigantic wand or bubble mower?

3.  Planes, trains, and automobiles!  Most little guys and gals alike love playing with pint-sized toy vehicles.  Mom and dad (and grandma, too), will appreciate the entertainment value–just pack a couple of vehicles in a diaper bag and pull out when needed to keep the little one occupied!

4.  Shape Sorters.  A classic, must-have gift.  Melissa & Doug makes terrific sorting toys.  Chicco and Sassy also make educational and fun sorters.

5.  Puppets.  Kids love puppet play, especially when they get to watch a show by Mom or Dad.  Finger puppets are a sure crowd pleaser!

Train Table Fun

KidKraft Train Table

I’m nearly convinced that one of the best gifts for a toddler/pre-K aged-child is a train table–with trains and a bunch of accessories, of course!  My children (and the children of nearly every parent I know) are drawn to them whenever they spot one, such as at Barnes and Noble or at the pediatrician’s office.

While the floor or dining room table may seem like an okay place for train play, nothing quite beats a train table that is specifically designed to keep kids busy for hours by encouraging imaginary play, while also neatly containing train parts.  A separate play space for the kids is a nice perk of a train table—fewer train parts to step on around the house, fewer times asking (okay, let’s get real here, begging) your kids to “clean up” their toys.

A quality train table can last for years.  Even after your kids outgrow the table for train play, it can be used as a versatile storage table (most train table manufacturers offer deep storage drawers as an add on accessory) or as another surface for doing other activities, like school assignments or art—some parents elect to paint a table’s surface with chalkboard paint for extended use.

There are a number of popular train table manufacturers, including reasonably priced tables by KidKraft (which offers tables in a choice of color, complete with colorful and fun play surfaces).  BabyEarth.com offers free shipping on orders over $99—that makes giving a train table gift this holiday an even merrier idea.

Finding “Made in USA” This Holiday

Melissa & Doug First Vehicles Set

A mom friend just asked me if I knew of a good place to buy “Made in USA” toys this holiday season. The best advice I could offer her was to look online.

After having ventured to two brick and mortar toy boutiques this past weekend looking specifically for American-made products, only to encounter disappointment, I’ve pretty much decided that online shopping is the only way to go–at least, if there’s any hope of efficiently crossing names off Santa’s shopping list.

I’m not the only one thinking that online retailers are the way to go this holiday season. Check out Regina Lewis’ recent blog entry on where to buy American-made toys. She suggests consumers kick off their shopping at:  How Americans Can Buy American  and Still Made in USA.com.

If your holiday shopping goal is simply to find manufacturers who seem attentive to toy safety, you may want to check out Melissa & Doug products.  Even though some of their products are (or have been) Made in China, Melissa & Doug appears attentive to consumer safety, at least according to the company’s Sept. 2007 email sent to concerned parents.
