ERGO Baby Carrier
Selected by Parenting Magazine as one of the "20 Best Products in the Last 20 Years" and hailing from Maui, Hawaii, the ERGO Baby Carrier was designed in 2001 by new mother Karin Frost. Disappointed with the current variety of slings and carriers on the market, her inspiration stemmed from the desire to ergonomically practice the philosophy of attachment parenting. The development helped to fuel the current baby-wearing revolution that originated with migrations of nomadic cultures from the Pleistocene era and led to the advent of the Cradleboard carrier used by Native American Indians. The method of attachment parenting is based on the premise that by keeping your infant secure against your body at all times, you maintain the ability to practice nurturing parenting and tune in most effectively with your child's needs. This creates emotional bonds between the parent and child, thereby teaching the infant to trust the parent at an early age and creating a template for the child to develop self-assured relationships throughout life. With the ERGO Baby Carrier, parents retain the ability to maintain hands-free mobility during the early growth of their child, including working, exercising, traveling and sleeping without ever having to separate themselves from their baby. The ERGO Baby Carrier offers more support than its hard-frame competitors and gives the parent the option of three different carrying positions on the body: back to front to hip. ERGO Developer Karin Frost aimed for a product that would allow parents to support and carry the child from birth to five years of age. The design of the ERGO Carrier is different in that the weight of the child is balanced between the parent's hips and shoulders, fully supporting the lumbar region, alleviating lower back fatigue and difficulty maintaining proper posture. The ERGO Baby Carrier also improves your baby's posture by elongating rather than compressing their spine against yours, ensuring proper hip and pelvis growth, unlike other carriers where the baby is hanging from the crotch. The material is 100% cotton canvas on the outside with a 200 thread count cotton poplin lining and hood. No material exists between the infant and parent. The ERGO Baby Carrier features a padded waistband with adjustable webbing for waist circumferences ranging from 25" to 43" that clips low around the hips for shorter mothers or up around the bellybutton for mothers who are taller than 5'9". The shoulder straps are wide and feature padding 1" thick with adjustable webbing. ERGO also designed reversible cotton terry cloth sucking pads (at additional charge) that attach around the shoulder straps with a strip of Velcro to keep your baby from chewing on the straps. The shoulder straps are linked by another strap that clips across the chest so you can easily switch the child from the front carry position to the back without having to remove the child or the carrier from your body. Simply unclip the chest strap and rotate the waistband around your hips while supporting the baby's back with one hand. The ERGO Baby Carrier also features a sleeping hood that allows you to nurse in privacy or to shield your infant from the sun. The hood fosters convenience for unclipping the carrier from the body without waking the infant. There is a zippered pocket on the carrier for personal belongings and a spot for extra storage while the sleeping hood is engaged. ERGO also offers a machine-washable Infant Insert (at additional charge) for use from birth up to four months. The removable padded cushion cradles the baby against your breast with both feet to one side, like a sling. ERGO maintains the stance that every parent should use a carrier that allows the infant to face inward at all times in the front carry position. Inward-facing carriers ensure that the baby can retract from frightening stimuli, learn to read parents' facial expressions and look for social cues to gauge how to react. They are also more conducive to developing healthy sleeping patterns. ERGO also offers other accessories ranging from diaper bags to backpacks.
