We have the monitor in the nursery upstairs and the base in our room downstairs. Usually, the nursery door is closed. The bedrooms are also on opposite ends of the house. The monitor works great, and also lets you know when it is out of range.

this is a terrible monitor, don´t buy it!!! The volume is so low you can´t listen to your baby. The distance range is terrible, you really have to be close to it.
It is a total waste of money
