About the INSTRUCTOR: Chan McDermott has worked in the maternal and child health since 1992, as a Bradley-certified childbirth educator, a breastfeeding educator, a doula and a public health professional. She has worked as a breastfeeding trainer in the Texas WIC program, served as the Texas Women’s and Prenatal Health Coordinator, and currently manages the Texas Family Violence Program. Chan has three wonderful children—the result of three wonderful births.
Our Philosophy: BabyEarth childbirth classes strive to help parents achieve the birth of their choice. The focus is on demystifying the birth process, learning relaxation skills, comfort techniques and increasing knowledge of the options surrounding birth. The goal is to give families more confidence as they prepare for the birth of their new baby and tools to facilitate the process. Classes will include group discussion, audio-visual materials and hands-on practice, as well as time for parents to ask questions about pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
The Class: The classes are designed to appeal to anyone having a baby, regardless of whether they prefer to birth naturally or with medication. The focus is on understanding the labor process and on learning coping strategies and comfort techniques to help the mother through the physical and emotional challenges of birth. Information is targeted to both mom and the people supporting her — her partner, relative or friend. In addition to classroom information and discussion, there are opportunities to practice relaxation and comfort techniques. The class discusses breathing, the focus is on relaxation-type breathing. Information is also provided on medications and other tools that are sometimes part of birth, including Pitocin and cesarean delivery.
