Deb Smith from Yorba Linda, CA July 8th, 2008 We have a stairway and wanted a gate that didn't need to be hard-installed for the bottom of the stairs. After researching on MANY websites, including the JPMA and Consumer Reports, I settled on this one. I had to find a quality gate that was easy enough for our 6-year-old to open, but kept our toddler (14 months) from climbing the stairs. We used this with the optional stairway Y spindle adapter and we are so HAPPY with its performance. The gate can be easily operated by the 6-year-old and has no trouble staying in place or being operated. My six year old's friends use it also and it has held up for the last month or so with no issues. It was very easy to install and has both written and picture directions. The only things that I can call a negative would be that you have to remember to close the gate behind you. It is NOT self-latching. From the day we bought it, we have made sure our oldest knew how important this was. So far, so good. Also, as you move through it, you have to step over a tiny bar that lays flat on the floor, which if you have shallow stairs as we do, is just something you remember to do and hasn't been an issue for us.
