S & A & Baby Makes 3... or 4 from Rockville, MD March 30th, 2009 We received a "pack n play" for trips to the grandparents. Rather than expose our baby to the off-gassing from the included vinyl mattress, we simply replaced it with an organic mattress and this natural wool Piddle Pad. (Naturepedic's porta crib mattress fits our play yard exactly. It makes packing it all up a little less contained, but it's worth it. We have other organic mattresses from that manufacturer, too, and adore them. Also from Baby Earth!) Anyway, we're thrilled with this Piddle Pad's construction and heft, while not being overly refined so that the natural lanolin of the wool still works as a terrific moisture barrier, and it doesn't bother even "wool allergic" skin once it's under an organic sheet. The best part (after it being so organically healthy, of course) is that the wool quickly warms under the body just enough so that the sheet on top doesn't feel so cold (keeping a moving baby asleep instead of alarmed and awakened when she shifts to a new cold spot.) We also got these fantastic Made in Canada natural wool Piddle Pads for our co-sleeper hammock by the bed (trimming a second travel size with pinking sheers) and for the crib later, too. (Unfortunately, I don't think we could have reused just one pad, because the kiddo will move between the sleeping spaces regularly. No time to unmake and remake beds over and over. To be less wasteful, perhaps all the baby sizes can be flat sewn together as a potty training mattress pad for the eventual twin bed.) -- Baby Earth always has the organic alternatives we choose to make a difference.
