I have a 12 month old who is interested in "inside the box, outside the box" and she loves to take the pieces and put them in the container. The green side is a hinged lid. She has experimented with trying to put the small pieces through the holes, but at this point, I think that is a little advanced for her. But the differing shapes and holes will probably interest her in the future, making this a long lasting item to keep her interest.
