Stokke was founded when respected designer and father Peter Opsvik discovered the need for a children's chair after seeing how uncomfortable his son was after he outgrew the traditional high chair. Peter envisioned a chair that would be fully adjustable to suit children of all ages, lift the child up to the family table and have a footrest for added comfort and stability. The result of these efforts was the Tripp Trapp high chair which was launched by Stokke in 1972.

Stokke's mission of not only caring for children but also caring for the planet is clear in the company's commitment to creating products of the highest quality that are exceptionally long-lasting. One of the lesser discussed topics in relation to protecting the environment is the longevity of products. The Tripp Trapp and other Stokke products are built to grow and transition with children so less energy is spent manufacturing new products and less waste is created in disposing of outgrown items.

All Stokke wooden products use beech wood grown and harvested in the beech wood belt of Eastern Europe. Each tree is grown in a natural and balanced process where stocks are fully replenished from new seedlings which grow from fallen beech nuts. Additionally, the varnish on all wooden products is formaldehyde free and complies with all international standards.

Each textile fabric used in the Stokke line of high chairs, cribs and changing tables complies with the Tex-textiles seal of approval. All plastic parts used in the Tripp Trapp baby set and 5-point safety harness can be recycled. The Xplory stroller exceeds all safety standards and is leading the way in innovative recycling with all plastics parts marked for future recycling, re-use and handling.
