Renew - Car Seat Recycling

Landfills are icky, so why toss when you can renew?

Renew. Reuse. Recycle.

It's true that our babies grow up so quickly, making many objects that are necessary today, obsolete tomorrow. Whether it's due to the memories or the money you paid for these things, you may find it difficult to part with old car seats, stroller, swings, or even high chairs, so they are left to take up space and collect dust in your basement and garage.

Unfortunately, many of these items are simply thrown away, ending up in landfills and negatively impacting the world your baby will inherit.

Donate Baby Items

One of the simplest ways to recycle unwanted baby products is to actually reuse them and donate baby items to someone in need. This can be done through a local charity or women’s shelter. You can also post the item in a local mom or community group.

Recycle Car Seats

While we used to offer the Baby Earth RENEW program to recycle car seats, unfortunately, we’ve had to close it. Due to car seat expiration dates and local regulations, we can no longer assist with car seat recycling.

There are not many cities that facilitate car seat recycling anymore. Target will occasionally have an event where you can bring in your old car seat for a discount on a new one. (The Target car seat recycling program typically happens around Earth Day).

If you don’t have a local car seat recycling program, this is what we recommend:

  • Separate any metal, rigid plastic and foam products from the car seat that cannot be reused or recycled.
  • Take any recyclable fabrics to be composted or to a reuse facility. *
  • Remember, if your car seat is not expired and still complies with current safety standards, donate it to a local charity.

If you have a Clek car seat, you can take advantage of their Clek car seat recycling program. Keep in mind, you will have to pay shipping.

We applaud your efforts to reuse and recycle baby products you no longer need. Whether you’re done with baby bottles, strollers or even high chairs, follow the guidelines above to keep them out of landfills.

It's that simple! Not only will you be an environmental hero, you will be part of the process of giving new life to those baby products you no longer can use.
