Oxygen During Labor: More Common Than You Think

Kylie Jenner was alarmed at the site of sister, Khloé Kardashian wearing oxygen mask.

On an episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Khloé Kardashian can be seen wearing an oxygen mask while in the delivery room. This caused Kylie Jenner to be concerned for her sister.

“What’s wrong with you?” Jenner asks.

“I needed to get the baby’s oxygen back up,” Kardashian calmly responded.

It’s important to remember there are many reasons you might need oxygen during labor, and it is a common practice. There is no reason to panic. Oxygen can help you and your baby handle the stresses of labor and manage the heart rate of you and/or your baby if needed.

“It’s not a bad thing and doesn’t mean anything bad is happening to the baby,” Jessica Shepherd, M.D., a minimally invasive gynecologist at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, told SELF. “But sometimes we want to do anything we can do to increase oxygenation at certain times during labor.”
