Toddler Drowning Turns into Mother's Warning

She wants to prevent the same tragedy from happening to other families.

A grieving mom is sharing her story and the shocking facts about drowning after her son accidentally drowned while they were on vacation.

Nicole Hughes was on vacation with her family in Fort Morgan, Alabama this past June when her 3-year-old son, Levi, wandered away from the dinner table and fell into the pool.

Hughes decided to share her story to help protect other children and parents from the gut-wrenching reality her family is currently facing.

"Do you know that drowning is the leading cause of death in children ages 1-4 and the second leading cause in ages 1-14? Do you know that 69% of children who drown are not expected to be swimming, yet they are found in water? Do you know that a child can drown in less than one minute?" Hughes writes on Scary Mommy.

She goes on to share that up until this happened, she had no idea that drowning was the leading cause of death among children ages 1-4, writing that she knew that drowning was a "potential danger," but she didn't know how prevalent it was. Like many parents, she also had no idea how quickly it could happen...until it was too late.

"Just moments before this horrific discovery, I split a brownie with him. I still had the other half of the brownie in my mouth when I jumped into the pool to grab my son. Mere moments, seconds," Hughes writes.
