Gender Reveal Party for Border Patrol Agent Results in Wildfire

What should have been a fun party ends in disaster

Over the last year, gender-reveal parties have become massively popular among expecting parents. 

An increasingly popular method for revealing the gender has been to break or pop objects containing a compound called Tannerite, revealing either a blue or pink dust.

What you may not know, however, is that Tannerite is an explosive compound. 

Dennis Dickey, a United States Border Patrol agent, learned this the hard way when his gender-reveal party started a wildfire that consumed more than 45,000 acres of land. 

When Dickey shot at a target containing Tannerite to reveal the gender of his unborn child, the resulting explosion set off a fire that spread to the Coronado National Forest.

Mr. Dickey is currently serving five years of probation, as well as paying restitution for the damage caused by the fire. 

This incident should be a good word of caution for parents throwing a gender-reveal party with similar chemicals.
